Summer in the Alps

Luxury ski chalets are not, of course, just to be used in the winter. Many of our portfolio of beautiful catered chalets remain open during the summer, so visitors can enjoy the mountains when they are green and lush rather than snow-covered and freezing – and enjoy them while staying in five-star, family-friendly chalet accommodation rather than an impersonal hotel.

Summer in the mountains is, in fact, a real treat. There is the breathtaking scenery, wonderful flora and fauna, and the weather can be gorgeous – surprisingly hot, but fresh too. It is quite magical seeing the mountains all alive with wild flowers, instead of covered in snow. In fact, we went to the Alps last summer when researching various luxury chalets for the site and were utterly charmed.

Some resorts are just winter ski resorts and really go to sleep over the summer months, but some are genuinely year-round, summer resorts, if anything becoming even busier in June, July and August. These include Zermatt, Megève, Morzine, Les Gets, Chamonix and Verbier.

Activities on offer range from gentle walking to hiking, mountain biking, golf, zip wiring and rock climbing, as well as music festivals, foodie getaways, scenic train rides, farm visits and spa & yoga retreats.

Several resorts keep some chair lifts open so you can still be whisked to the highest peaks for the best views too, while many also have glaciers so you can even indulge in some summer skiing and practise a few ski turns with no risk of bone-chilling temperatures or unpleasant white-outs.

Here is a list of the luxury ski chalets that are open through the summer. Some operate on a catered chalet basis, some on a self-catered chalet basis, while there are also options to hire the entire chalet or book by the room. Many have attractive summertime offers, run themed weekends or programmes such as yoga, mountain biking or even painting.
