Contemporary high-spec chalet living

usp
Chalet Janluke (its name comes from the middle names of the owner’s two sons) is the traditional Swiss ski chalet revamped for the 21st century. It employs a mixture of traditional and modern materials such as exposed concrete juxtaposed with traditional Larch timber, while also combining old and new building techniques.

location
The chalet is located in the heart of La Tzoumaz, a charming resort in the Four Valleys fully linked in to Verbier. It has fantastic views out of its floor-to-ceiling sheet glass windows in the living room, giving a 180-degree perspective of the surrounding mountains and forest.

style
The chalet is the creation of an award-winning architect and designer and, as such, the style is very much contemporary chalet chic. It sits happily in the landscape and with the local vernacular, in a contemporary but respectful way. The form is quite simple and reminiscent of traditional Swiss barns, using ancient materials such as wood and stone. ^

rooms
All the bedrooms can accommodate full twin beds that can be changed into super kingsize doubles. The children's bedroom is fitted with two bunk beds, although this can be changed into twin beds or double if requested. All have full en-suite facilities with a wet floor system accommodating 2m walk-in showers. All rooms also have TVs complete with Apple TV systems. ^

food & drink
The food offering at Chalet Janluke is totally flexible – menus are not imposed on guests at all and timings are moveable. In general the chalet does mountain food with a modern twist, using lots of local produce, as well as French-based cuisine. They do tartiflettes and tarte tatins, plus home-made soups and can even stage themed foodie nights such as Mexican or Savoyard. The house wines include local whites and decent reds from further afield, while the champagne is Perrier-Jouet or Mumm Cordon-Rouge. An upgrade to finer wines is possible, though the house wines are excellent.
^

service
There are two full time staff – one a professionally trained chef and the other a fluent French-speaking host. The chalet also has its own driver service. ^

spa facilities
The chalet has a roomy 8-person outdoors Jacuzzi with private terrace with external music, as well as indoor 2m x 2m fully glazed sauna and internal lounging area plus shower.
^

children
Chalet Janluke is perfectly set up for children. It can offer an early supper with special menu, plus it has a high chair, a sleeping cot, sledges and a big, secluded rear-garden play area, safe from any roads. The chalet also comes with a selection of children's movies, audio books and music as part of the Apple TV chalet music (10,000 songs) and movie library (1000 movies) that is accessible in all bedrooms, the living room and spa. A full selection of board games is also available, plus PS3 and Nintendo Wii.
^

extras
Janluke has two off street parking spaces, wifi, a chalet computer and a printer.
^

for skiers
The chalet is just a 100m walk to the lift. In certain conditions it can be skied out of, but it is always ski-in. Skiers have plenty to entertain them in La Tzoumaz itself, but they just need to take the gondola up to the ridge where they can access the whole of the Verbier ski area from Savoleyres too.
^

for non skiers
Non-skiers can enjoy the private spa, a swimming pool 100m from the chalet, mountain walking and snow-shoeing, and even toboggan runs. La Tzoumaz has the longest toboggan run in French-speaking Switzerland.
^

best thing
The views out of the living room which feels like it is perched just on the edge of the mountain.
^

worst thing
Possibly the fact that the chalet is not in Verbier, but given that you can ski in Verbier just over the ridge, stay in luxury and not pay Verbier prices, then it is not really a 'worst thing' at all.
^

getting there
Sion is the nearest airport, just half an hour away, while Geneva is around 1hr 30mins. Transfers from Sion or Martigny train station are included in the price.
^

bottom line
Chalet Janluke costs from £750 per person per week. ^
