Roomy modern chalet with
stunning dual-aspect top floor
usp
Chalet Sous Les Bois is a lovely, light-filled, generously proportioned chalet with big bedrooms that has been refurbished with great love and attention to detail by its young British owners. It has a fantastic double aspect top floor up in the roof which has splendid views up and down the valley.
location
The chalet is located in Les Houches, just five minutes away by car from the ski area and 20 minutes away from Grands Montets at the other end of the valley.
style
Cool, bright and modern. The chalet has large, designer sofas, lots of big windows and bleached wooden beams. There are beautiful touches throughout that hint at the chalet’s history too, such as an old grandfather clock that has been salvaged, and ancient wood panelling in parts, including one of the bedrooms. ^
rooms
The rooms are all a really good size, most with space enough for chaise longues. The bathrooms are all beautifully tiled, one with a dramatic stand-alone overflow bath, another with a roll-top slipper bath. ^
food & drink
A professional chef lays on the food at Chalet Sous Les Bois and he is impressive. Dinner when we stayed began with a roasted winter salad of pumpkin, beetroot, parsnip and sweet potato served with hazelnut cream followed by seared veal carpaccio with caramelised onion, mushroom and thyme tart. The wines were excellent too, all French and thoroughly decent. Complimentary champagne was also served on the first and last night. ^
service
The service at Chalet Sous Les Bois is nicely unstuffy but still properly attentive – an excellent balance. ^
spa facilities
Sous les Bois has a lovely large seven-man outdoor hot tub. ^
children
Kids have their own second living area with TV and DVD player. There also books, board games, sledges, children’s DVDs and an iPod dock. ^
extras
There is wifi throughout the chalet and a printer for guest use. The chalet also has a pool table and bar area on the top floor. ^
for skiers
Les Houches is the family-friendly ski area in the Chamonix valley, less gnarly than the others but still with some good, challenging skiing. It is great for mixed ability groups and excellent in bad weather, many of the runs being tree-lined. You can buy a Les Houches only ski pass, or else purchase the Mont Blanc Unlimited which gives you Les Houches as well as all the other ski areas plus Verbier, Courmayeur and even rides on the Aiguille du Midi up to the Vallée Blanche. ^
for non skiers
The Chamonix valley is extremely well set up for non-skiers. There is the Alpine Museum in town, lots of lovely shops, a market on Saturdays, snow shoeing in winter and hiking in summer, or even visits through to spa at Pre St Didier in Italy. ^
corporate groups
The Chalet is well set up for corporate groups and business clients.

best thing
The top floor. ^
worst thing
The fact that it is in Les Houches which is the least challenging ski area in the Chamonix valley – great for families and mixed ability groups though. ^
getting there
The nearest airport is Geneva, just under an hour away. Transfers are not included in the price but the chalet can recommend companies. ^
bottom line
The whole chalet in the winter costs from £8950 for the week, rising to £14,950. ^
